So… You’re having baby…

What on earth are you going to buy? A million things! There’s so much great stuff out there it’s hard to know what you’re going to need. Especially as everyone you know is giving you everything you’ve never wanted and have no where to store.

What are some things babies do? I can think of a few. Eat, sleep, cry and poo. Oh, and I suppose make the world a better place with one smile!

Here’s a few of our absolute Infancy favourites:

For you to wear

For starters, you’re going to need something to wear. Each Infancy store stocks a small range of maternity basics such as tops, dresses, skirts and pants. We also stock Serafine Maternity jeans. They are the ultimate in comfort, fit and fashion and will sort out any wardrobe crises before and after your baby arrives.

For baby to wear

The Infancy Essentials Range is our own in house brand which changes from season to season and caters for babies and children up to 6 years. This Spring/ Summer we have short sleeved Apple print all in ones and long sleeved sleep suits.

Purebaby Organic make über soft, super washable, well fitting garments for newborn to 2 years. We tend to stock a capsule collection of this brand and it tends to fly off the racks.

Buttermilk Baby brightens my day! This season features our signature bloomers, singlets and all in ones in swallows, spots and aeroplanes. Timeless and practical this range is sure to brighten your day too! Check out the new range at the Infancy Online store.

For Feeding

Infancy Essentials bibs, with their simple no fuss design, stretch cotton and popper button clasp are a great everyday bib.

Mizzle bibs are also fabulous, have been horrendously popular, and provide great coverage. They also have a super soft terry towelling backing.

Sure, you can use any house hold cushion or pillow for feeding your baby, or nothing at all, seriously whatever goes. But breast or bottle Tortellini Cushions are the bomb! Compact, firm, form fitting, funky and multi function! That and they come in a range of earthy colours to match your nursery or couch.

For Sleeping

A wrap is a wrap is a wrap. What on earth is a wrap anyway? Wraps are used for swaddling babies, restricting limb movement, assisting them to sleep, stay asleep, and simulating the cosy environment of the womb. There are a million types of wraps and you’re just gonna have to keep trying them until you find one your baby likes. But these are our favourites. Aden and Anais Muslin wraps come in sets of four or as singles. They wash incredibly well, come in a range of prints and are perfect for a Summer baby.

Lil Fraser Wraps are one of those products that we can never keep on the shelves for more than a second. They are a modern and Australian take on the traditional (still excellent) muslin wraps. Made from ultra-stretchy jersey cotton, these wraps are extra large, multi purpose and extra chic.

If you desire even more of a straight-jacket effect, then Wrap me up sleeping bags are for you. These little gems have taken the swaddling concept to the next level, keeping your baby safely swaddled with their arms up and without being able to scratch themselves! As this is their natural sleeping state, babies settle quicker and are less likely to wake themselves up. Also, one layer of fabric instead of several overlapping layers lowers the risk of SIDS and makes night time nappy changes easy peasy!

Out and About

When you’re out and about and baby just won’t settle in the pram or you’re trying to hang all those nappies on the line, some form of baby carrier will come in handy. There are lots of different styles on the market and it is a very personal choice, so we’ve chosen two that we think are the best. For newborns the Mini Monkey Sling is ideal, as babies rest horizontally as if they are cradled in your arms. They are easy to get on and off, easy to adjust and easy to care for and store. They are also suitable for older children who can sit up, as the sling can be swivelled on to the hip.

The Manduca Carrier, direct from Europe, is going to work for parents who prefer weight distribution across both shoulders. It’s ergonomic design supports your baby upright (even newborns), without putting extra pressure on their fragile hips. Despite facing inwards only, as parent and baby’s body fit together better this way, the carrier can be worn on the front, back and side and is suitable for children up to 20kgs!

Even when they’ve just arrived, you’re little one is going to need sun protection. Out at the park, in the carrier, in the pram, in the garden. An extra small size in the Toshi brand should be plenty small enough for newbies, especially as they have a handy drawstring at the back for gathering.

For Changing

Why do babies need changing when you least expect it? Who knows. And why are ‘movements’ so diabolical when you’re away from home? All you can do is be as prepared as you can and hope you don’t get poo in your hair.

Carrying a baby or maternity bag is going to help. Somewhere to stash nappies, wipes, a change of clothes, bibs, valium… But surely sometimes you just can’t be bothered dragging the entire nursery around with you. That’s when you need a portable change wallet. These babies fit easily under prams, or in the car or your handbag and hold just enough to prevent armageddon. We stock the Skip Hop Pronto Change Mat and the Isoki Change Mat Clutch. Both are excellent. Take your pick. It may come down to which colour best matches your pram…

For Playing

Newborn babies don’t really do much. The most interesting thing in their world is you! But having a few distractions may help soothe and occupy them. The Black and White Mobile is designed to entrance newborn babies up to about 4 months, as their vision develops from black, white and red to incorporate the all the colours of the rainbow. You can hang one above the change table or put it on a baby gym. Trust me, even if you think its the oddest looking piece of cardboard ever, your baby is gonna love it and it may even buy you 10 minutes of quiet. Every second counts.

Another sure-fire winner is the Alimrose Squeaker Monkey. These guys make this kind of annoying squeaky oinky noise that seems to blow their little minds. You may think, “thats gonna get old pretty quick”, and it may, but a couple of quick squeaks and you could avoid tears, perform a smooth nappy change or distract your little one when settling them in the pram or car seat.

For Bathing

We’ve recently started stocking two great ranges for bath time. Mozi Mini, proudly Australian owned and made, do a lovely baby body wash, made from a delicate blend essential oils and free of artificial fragrances. The range also includes a hooded towel, body lotion and massage oil perfect for settling baby after bath time and preparing for bed.

Mizzle, also Australian owned, do deliciously soft hooded towels and muslin face washers. These face washers also make excellent burping and clean up cloths.

And this is just the beginning. Buying for your baby is as fun as it baffling. At Infancy we’re certainly not going to have everything you and your new baby are going to need, like nappies, strollers and bottles. But we are definitely going to have some unique products that you don’t see everyday. Feel free to pop in ask us questions. We are more than happy to help you work it all out. Better still don’t buy anything… Get your friends and family to!!
